Description
The only cool place of Rajasthan, it owes the climate to its rich forest around. The road leading to Mt. Abu is a curved one characterized by arid region dotted with huge rocks in weird shapes and wind with high velocity. Apart from being a hill station it also attracts tourist for the Jain temples dating back to 11th and 13th century.
Abu according to a legend stands for the son of Himalaya, deriving its name from Arbuada, the powerful serpent of Lord Shiva who rescued Nandi.
Mt. Abu has been home to many sages. Most famous was sage Vashishtha who is believed to have created four Agnikula Rajputs from a Yagna, to protect the earth from the demons.
Location
With an altitude of 1220 meters, Mount Abu is the highest point of Aravali range which runs through Rajasthan. A resort as well as a celebrated place of Rajput and Jain pilgrimage, this holy mountain lies at the southern extremity of the Aravali ranges. Surrounded by thick forest and rich vegetation, it looks like an Oasis in the parched Thar desert. It lies in between two states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
This spot is also known as the Anadra point which offers an enchanting view of the Verdant plains and valleys. The place looks most beautiful during the dusk hours.
Situated near the Nakki lake is the temple dedicated to Shri Raghunathji, with a beautiful image of the deity that was placed in by the great Hindu preacher Ramanand in 4th century A.D.
A natural spring flowing through a sculpted cow's head gives the shrine its name. The famous yagna by sage Vashishtha was performed here. A beautifully sculpted temple of Arbuada stands behind. Nearby is the huge marble image of Nandi.
The name of this lake has a curious origin. The word nakki means finger nails, reflecting that the lake was clawed out of the earth with the help of fingernails of the Gods. It is a tiny lake amid the hills dotted with several islets approachable by a boat the rock formations around are interesting. They are the toad rock, the nun rock etc. It is the only artificial lake in India 1200 mts above sea level.
These are breathtakingly beautiful carved temples 2 miles north of Mt. Abu. The intricacy of carving gives a feeling of ivory instead of marble that they are carved in. They are the master pieces in temple architecture and sometimes considered to be superior to the Taj Mahal. The Vimal- Vashi temple was built in 1031 A.D. which took 1500 workers and several years to build it. There are 48 pillars 16 of which have images of female figures in dancing poses. The rang mandap are decorated with elephants and Goddesses.
Chiseled out of a huge rock, this temple is also known as the Arbuda devi temple. It is formed by a natural cleft. Climb of 360 steps reaches to the goddess.
