Bentota-Negombo-Bentota
The boat trips tend to concentrate on the wildlife that you can see as you meander along, mainly waders and also some beautiful kingfishers, including the unusual pied kingfisher, plus bee-eaters, brahminy kites, etc. You are also likely to see water monitors. The large ones look unnervingly like crocodiles! The first boat trip will be at a beautiful river called Madu Ganga in Balapitiya which offers a glimpse of how it has become a part of the life of the people in the area. The main treasure of Madu Ganga is its mangroves that act as a bio-lock to the area in giving protection to the variety of aquatic plants and animal life. They provide a home for different kinds of aquatic plants, crabs, shrimps, fish, various invertebrates and other animal life .
Day 2: Negombo
Where the canal meets the sea, you can also take a boat trip from to Negombo which takes 30 mins or so. You can then walk into the town to do a bit of shopping or whatever before doing the return trip by boat again. The trip from Waikkal could be done in different directions, the canals/lagoons do run until close to the town. Theres a few canals dug in the lagoon area there, together called the Dutch canals as theyre indeed from that period. The best that you see is nature and wildlife (mainly birds and lizards), though there are a few optional stops in small villages too. Return boat trip to Negombo (or Waikkal). Check out from the hotel and head back to Bentota
