THE HOUSE OF MG - A METRO HERITAGE HOTEL, AHMEDABAD

Address: Opp. Sidi Saiyad Mosque,Lal Darwaja ,City Ahmedaba
Place: Ahmedabad, India - Zip / Pin Code: 380001

Description: ‘The House of MG’ is a boutique heritage hotel in Ahmedabad. This stately property, built in 1924 as a home for a wealthy textile magnate, has been tastefully restored to retain its old-world charm but with all the amenities and comforts of a world-class business hotel. The Lonely Planet Guide and the Rough Guide recommend this luxury hotel highly and the discerning British travel guide 'Sawday's - Places to Stay in India' has singled out this design hotel as the only leading hotel worth a mention in its Ahmedabad hotels section. It has just just fourteen rooms and suites, one service apartment, two acclaimed restaurants, a conference lounge, an indoor swimming pool and a health club. There is also an in-house design studio and gift shop that carries specially designed and hand-made items by master-craftsmen of Ahmedabad and vicinity. ‘Agashiye’, its terrace eatery, is an award winning Gujarati thali restaurant that serves the finest Gujarati cuisine in the traditional fine-dining style. ‘The Green House’, its courtyard café, is another popular eatery that serves ala carte options from Gujarat, Rajasthan and South India including seasonal fresh juices, hand-churned ice-creams and freshly brewed coffees and teas. The Hotel has ‘The HBM Lounge & Courtyard’ as its laid-back yet efficient conference venue and meeting hall. Its ‘Lotus Pool’ is undoubtedly the most glamorous indoor swimming pool in Ahmedabad with a patio and health club attached. The House of MG is conveniently located in the city centre. There is ample parking space within the complex with valet parking available. Both the Airport and the Railway Station are within a 7 km distance. Agashiye' in Gujarati means on the terrace. This beautiful restaurant is spread over two huge terraces are inter-connected by a smaller one that houses a small wooden cottage. At Agashiye, the food is freshly prepared, a lot of it in the terrace kitchen where you can see it. Our attempt is to retain the distinct flavours of the ingredients and we use both spices and oil sparingly. The menu at Agashiye changes daily and varies seasonally too, so an item that you particularly liked during a previous visit may not be there on the menu. Though we hope you'd find another favourite! The staff at Agashiye comprises mostly of men from neighboring villages. During dinner, they will guide you to the waiting area where you will be served juice and starters. You will be informed when your table is ready. During lunch, you are seated at your table right away. The food is served in a kansa thali immediately on being seated at the table. The meal starts with a choice of Indian breads and ends with rice. Servings are unlimited. The staff has been instructed not to constantly hover around you and yet be attentive. In case you have a specific requirement, a supervisor will be there to assist you. Please don't be surprised if you are served a non-Gujarati dish or hear non-Indian music at Agashiye. It is neither an ethnic nor a theme restaurant. It is meant to be a dining experience in a contemporary Gujarati home. The Green House café is located under a covered pavilion on the ground floor of the building. It serves freshly cooked Indian snacks, fresh fruit juices and home-made ice-creams. The open kitchen in one corner of the courtyard, our food theatre, is where you will see cooks preparing your meal in front of your eyes. The Green House café extends into an arched air-conditioned room that was earlier the 'buggy room' of the mansion - horse drawn buggies were in use till the early forties. On the menu you will find a variety of Indian snacks ranging from chaat, batakavada, patra and panaki to small meals of delicious Indian breads and vegetables. Most items are available as takeaways. The restaurant is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The House of Mangaldas Girdhardas, the 15 room Heritage Hotel in Ahmedabad has added an Indoor Swimming Pool, Health Club and Restaurant in its premises, called The Lotus Pool. The theme of this space is inspired by a Pichhwai from Nathadwara in Rajasthan. The Mangaldas family is a believer in the Shrinathji deity and the lotus theme seemed apt for this new addition to the boutique hotel. The poolside restaurant is spread over three sections - an air-conditioned section, a poolside section and an outdoor section. The Health Club and Massage Room (with a Shiatsu massage chair) is located behind the 10 meter long pool. The uniquely designed pool is raised 15” above the ground to allow easy interaction between the swimmer and person standing outside. Its ledge serves as a seat. The entire ceiling above is covered by a digitally created lotus fresco with a 17 foot long, 300 kilogram, mild-steel, calder inspired lotus mobile hanging from its centre. The same pattern is repeated in the glass mosaic tiled floor of the pool. The Lotus Pool is the first ‘swim and dine’ restaurant of its kind and is open to all House of MG patrons. Entry to the pool is with a small cover charge that is fully set off against the food bill. There is an extensive choice of Indian and International snacks on the menu and the venue remains open from 7AM to 11PM daily.
