Description: This historically rich area of Rajasthan is renowned for its many forts and palaces built by Shekhawati Rajas. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, its rich business community of Marwaris commissioned artists to paint their ancestral havelis as a symbol of their success. Today, the area is noted for its lavishly painted frescos - the highest concentration in the world. These depict mythological and historical themes, including images of gods, goddesses, animals and the life history of Lords Rama and Krishna. Mandawa A remote feudal principality in the centre of the Shekhawati region, Mandawa was an important trading outpost on the fabled silk route to China. Thakur Nawal Singh, the Rajput ruler of Nawalgarh and Mandawa, built a fort in 1755 to protect this outpost. The township that grew around the fort soon attracted a large community of traders who settled here. Mandawa is known as an “open art gallery” due to the profusion of beautifully painted havelis in the town and surrounding areas. The charm and charisma of Mandawa truly comes alive at Udai Vilas Palace, Mandawa. This beautiful hotel, spread over more than 3 acres of verdant lawns, is a veritable oasis in the midst of the stark grandeur of the Rajasthan desert.
