It is a city in and the parish seat of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. Opelousas is the center of zydeco music. It celebrates its heritage at the Creole Heritage Folklife Center, one of the destinations on the new Louisiana African American Heritage Trail.
Home of the Louisiana Video Collection Library and the Southwest LA Zydeco Festival archives, the Opelousas Museum & Interpretive Center preserves and interprets the history and culture of the area. Exhibits include information on agriculture, music, food, religion, Native Americans, folk culture, and the Civil War.
The museum is housed in the Joseph Richard Wier Memorial Building, c. 1820. The Opelousas Museum of Art features loan exhibitions from major museums and private art collections.
