The only arboretum and botanical garden in the United States staffed entirely by volunteers,the 52-acre Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens was established in 1980 and continues to grow with the help of more than 300 individuals who maintain the trees, plants,shrubs and seed-gifts, which are all labeled throughout the garden.
Established in 1874,the Dubuque Museum of Art is Iowa`s oldest cultural institution.
Three and a half miles northeast of Dyersville,this Iowa cornfield is a major tourist site that is open from April to November. It was featured in the 1989 movie Field of Dreams, which was based on the W.P. Kinsella`s book "Shoeless Joe." A gift shop and a concession stand are on site.
Offering a view of the historic Dubuque business district,the Mississippi River and three states, the Fenelon Place elevator is known as the world`s shortest,steepest scenic railway at 296 feet in length. Passengers are elevated 189 feet from Fourth Street to Fenelon Place.
An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution,the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium is accredited by the American Association of Museums,which is held by only nine percent of American museums.Visitors can enjoy the National Rivers Hall of Fame,Fred W. Woodward Riverboat Museum, and the five large aquariums at the William Woodward Discovery Center.
