With more than 220 miles of trails and most of the county''s population centered in Ashland, there''s plenty of solitude on the trails. Reintroduced in 1995, the Clam Lake herd is the first to grace northern Wisconsin in 120 years. The forest and bog of the Chequamegon National Forest suit the elk well. The herd has grown from 25 to 34 animals with nine calves born in 1997.
