The oldest surviving home in Olympia, this Gothic Revival home features gothic pointed arches, decorative millwork, and a steeply pitched roof. An unusual collection of original family furnishings fill this magnificent house that is listed on both the National and Washington State Registers of Historic Places, as well as on the Olympia Heritage Register.
The Hands On Childrens Museum features six galleries with numerous interactive displays. Children are encouraged to play creatively while learning information in a variety of settings. Unlike some children''s museums, the Hands on Childrens Museum is designed for a variety of age groups, including displays for parents with infants.
About an hour and a half from Seattle, this 3,000-acre wildlife refuge plays host to an incredible number of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, about 100 species in all. There are seven miles of open trails, a fishing area, a new mile-long wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and a visitor''s center. A dike separates salt water from freshwater, so you can view a variety of habitats. In autumn, the bird population swells as migratory birds stop off to eat and rest before continuing south.
Dedicated to preserving vintage aircraft, this unique museum has numerous vintage aircraft on display including a T-28 Trojan, F-104A Starfighter, and a T-37B Tweety Bird. Many events are held here throughout the year and a gift shop is on site.
A vital member of the Olympia Arts Scene, this symphony orchestra was founded in 1947 and performs a regular concert schedule of four season concerts, one pops concert, and one summer concert each season.
The busiest road in the National Park is the winding mountain road from the Nisqually entrance (2000 ft), which runs through beautiful forest country by way of Kautz Creek to Longmire (2765 ft; mineral springs; National Park administration) and up to Paradise (5400 ft; winter sports facilities). From here there is a choice of memorable hikes.
Dedicated to preserving and depicting the political and cultural history of Washington, this museum features two floors of exhibits that include interesting temporary exhibits and exhibits on regional Native American history. The gardens that surround the museum have native Northwest plants an ethnobotanical garden is also on site.
The garden is symbolic of the ties between Olympia and Yashiro, Japan.The specific placement of plants, water and stone carries a message of land stewardship, nature, religious thought, friendship, compassion, cultural exchange and understanding.
