The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most traveled in our nation`s National Park System. The scenic thoroughfare is 470 miles long and zigzags through the mountains of the Shenandoah to the Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina.The parkway overlaps Asheville at US 25, 70 and 74 and is popular with both motorists and bicyclists.
Formerly the old zoo, many of the old inhabitants can be found at this nature center that features exhibits that elucidate and explicate the plant and animal wildlife of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. A children`s hands-on nature lab and educational farm with a petting area are also on site.
North Carolina`s mineral fields contain the greatest variety of minerals in the nation. Burnham Standish Colburn was fascinated with these minerals and acquired quite a collection.
