    It lies on the east coast of the Island of Hawaii in the heart of Hilo Bay. Beaches of black, gray, brown and white sand give way to mountains and dramatic waterfalls.It is home of Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which took place after easter.

Several of the trees in the park are said to have been planted during the reign of the Hawaiian King David Kalakaua who was a frequent visitor to Hilo and after whom the park is named. A bronze statue of King Kalakaua stands in the middle of the park.
The Lyman Museum houses a collection of artifacts, fine art, and natural history items.
