It is the largest lake in Taiwan as well as a popular tourist attraction.It is 27 meters deep and surface area of approximately 7.93 km².The Eastern part of the lake is round like the sun, while the Western part is shaped like a crescent moon - hence the name "Sun Moon Lake".The beauty of Sun Moon Lake is found in the surrounding mountains.Seven trails are available for hiking.Location

The length of this trail is about 1.5 kilometers. All the steps of trail are made from red bricks. You can see many water-fowls in the morning. Walking down to the wharf, you can see the beautiful scenery of Ci'en Pagoda, Lalu Island.
Hsuan Tsang was Pious, learned, and fluent in Sanskrit, he later translated the texts that he brought back with him from India.Part of his relics were kept in the Hsuankuang Temple.Later 1965 they were moved to the newly constructed Hsuan Tsang Temple.
It is less than 4.6 km long and is divided into two parts.The first part of the trail takes you to the Tea Research and Extension Station, Yuchih branch.It is a little over 2 miles and climbs more than 300 feet. The second part of the trail takes you to the Weather Forecast Station.This is a shorter trail (less than a mile) but steeper.It climbs more than 500 feet.This trail takes you into a forest of indigenous conifer trees.
Wenwu Temple is located at the shoulder of mountain where is on the north of Sun Moon Lake. It was built in 1938. People worried the water of Sun Moon Lake might cover Longfeng Temple and Ihuatang of Shuishotsun, they built Wenwu Temple. The Wenwu Temple is 2 (Longfeng Temple and Ihuatang) in 1. It was rebuilt in 1969. Its gate is face to the north. People pray the Civil Saint of Confucius, the Military Saint of Guangong, and the Established God of two temples at the Wenwu Temple. The temple is popular among students.
