  • Description

Bangkok, known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or Krung Thep for short, is the capital, largest urban area and primate city of Thailand. It was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom and came to the forefront of Thailand when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayuthaya. Bangkok has been the political, social and economic center of not only Thailand but for much of South East Asia and Indochina as well. Its influence in the arts, politics, fashion, education, entertainment as well as being the business, financial and cultural center of Asia has given Bangkok the status of a global city. The city''s mix of Thai, Chinese, Indian, Buddhist, Muslim and Western cultures combined with the driving force of the Thai economy makes it increasingly attractive to foreigners both for business and pleasure and has made the city one of the world''s top tourist destinations. The Bangkok special administrative area covers 1,568.7 km2 (606 sq mi), making it the 68th largest province in Thailand. Much of the area is considered the city of Bangkok, therefore making it one of the largest cities in the world. Bangkok is known for its large green sections within the city centre, including the large forest park between Yannawa and Samut Prakan. This part of the city covers an area of over 50 km2.. Bangkok is considered to be one of the world''s top tourist hotspots. According to Travel and Leisure magazine it is Asia''s best tourist destination, the third in the world in 2006 and overall best city in the world in 2008.Bangkok is Thailand''s major tourist gateway, which means that the majority of foreign tourists arrive in Bangkok. The city boasts some of the country''s most visited historical venues such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun.

This is an innovative park-cum-museum (Muang Boran in Thai) in which visitors can learn about Thai architecture and history. As you drive around, you will find famous buildings, monuments and temples representing all regions in Thailand. Visitors will need a private car to navigate around the 280-acre outdoor museum. Set aside a whole day for this visit, as the attraction is located a little outside Bangkok, in Samut Prakan.
This lovely century-old Anglican and Episcopalian Church is set in a tranquil environment sheltered from the traffic on Sathorn Road. There is some shaded parking space inside the grounds. The Protestant Church Committee was established in Bangkok in July 1861. In May 1864 The Protestant Union Chapel opened for worship. Then in April 1905 a new church building was dedicated and given the name Christ Church. This church remains a beautiful example of colonial architecture. Its interior is painted white and features stained glass windows.
This Byzantine labyrinth of shops, stalls and alleys is where the movers and shakers of Thailand''s economy got started. It has been the main trading center for the Chinese in Thailand since they moved from their old site near the Grand Palace some 200 years ago. Everything from household and electronic goods to Chinese medicine and antique vases are available. It is also a good place to go for deals on gold and obviously Chinese food. Some stores and restaurants are open 24 hours.
Built incongruously in one of Bangkok''s hubs of consumerism, this very popular shrine is devoted to Brahma and Erawan, his elephant. Erected by the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, the shrine was beset by a series of accidents during its construction in the 1950s. Squeeze past the vendors selling garlands and wooden elephants for a glimpse of the glittering open-air pavilion where worshipers gather before the shrine, often barely visible beneath the offerings made. Traditional Thai dancing can often be seen here. Admission is free.
This small but fine museum is the former home of the man who saved the Thai silk industry from collapse. Constructed from six different traditional teak houses, the walls were reassembled from the outside in. Inside you will find Jim Thompson''s beautiful collection of art and artifacts from Thailand and Southeast Asia. The guided tours are extremely informative and the grounds have just had a new bar and exhibition area added. A must-see, especially when you consider all the mystery surrounding Thompson''s disappearance.
Located on the sixth floor of the Central City Bangna Shopping Center this is a great fun zone for families as it has a waterpark and over twenty fun packed amusement rides, reasonably priced, including go-carts, a Leo Coaster, and a traveltron simulator. Kids particularly love the large water slide and can spend the entire day getting wet.
Lumpini Park is a popular oasis, named after Buddha''s birthplace. The green expanse provides a relaxing and relatively peaceful retreat from the heat and noise of the rest of the city. The best time to arrive is just after sunrise, when hordes of fitness fanatics can be spotted jogging, doing aerobics, practicing tai chi, yoga or even ballroom dancing! You can hire a paddle boat, eat at one of the reasonably priced outdoor restaurants, or just take it easy under a shady tree.
Drawing children by the hordes, this delightful amusement center has two main sections, the Water Park and the Playland. The Water Park charges an annual membership, which entitles members to use its facilities and enables them to receive discounts on other activities. It also offers swimming lessons. You can also pay a small fee to use the facilities on a day basis. The Playland area offers lots of fun rides, including a mini-train, swing chair and many more. Children must be less than 135 centimeters to enjoy the rides.
Constructed in the 1860''s in an area that continues to have a high proportion of Indian residents to this day, this colorful temple features a tall facade of intricate, entwined Hindu deities. Located across from Silom Village , the main shrine is devoted to Shiva''s consort, Shakti, her son Subramaniam and her elephant-headed son, Ganesha. There are also a few Buddha images inside, so Buddhist Thais also come here to worship. If you are on a shopping expedition around Silom, combine it with a visit here to make it a culturally enriching day as well.
Located on 440 acres of land, this park is indeed a fantastic haven for children and adults alike. It comprises the Safari Park, where wild animals like zebras, deer, giraffes, tigers, lions and bears prowl freely in commune with nature and the Marine Park, where marine animals dip, dive and explore their watery habitat. Daily Shows include the Orang Utan Boxing Show, Sea Lion Show, The Bird Show, White Tiger Show, Stuntman Show, Dolphin Show.
The spectacular Grand Palace is an architectural marvel and the gem of Bangkok''s impressive collection of temples and palaces. Although the Royal Family no longer resides here, the Palace is still used for ceremonial purposes, and most of it remains closed to the public. However, the four main buildings are incorporated in the grounds of the glittering Wat Phra Keo and must be visited to experience their brilliant, diverse styles.
Opened in 1993, this is the first museum in Thailand to tell the story of working-class people. It is divided into six rooms which demonstrate the development of Thai labor from the serf (slave) period up until the present day. There are murals depicting the evolution of working conditions and many displays of actual machinery used in these times.
This obelisk, constructed during the early days of King Rama IX''s reign, is composed of reinforced marble and concrete. It was built to memorialize soldiers, policemen and civilians who gave their lives in the service of their country. The Skytrain runs around it, and it is surrounded by shopping malls and fast food eateries. Plus, the roundabout is probably the busiest in the country.
This Wat is made of white Carrana marble, hence it is also called The Marble Temple. Constructed by King Rama V in 1901, it employs European ecclesiastic details, such as stained-glass windows and contains a superb cloister collection of bronze Buddha images. These images, which are 33 originals and 20 reproductions, represent famous idols and styles from all over Asia and other Buddhist countries. This is an excellent place to watch religious festivals and processions.
Also known as Wat Phra Chetuphon, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, this 200-year-old wat is Bangkok''s largest. Bursting with history, its highlight is the fantastic gold-plated reclining Buddha, 46 meters long and 15 meters high, with mother of pearl inlaid feet, themselves three meters long. Wat Pho is also Thailand''s oldest learning center and a respected Thai massage school operates here, teaching techniques to the eager and providing massages to the weary.
