Singapore's Chinatown is an ethnic neighbourhood featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements and a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. Chinatown is located within the larger district of Outram.

As the largest ethnic group in Singapore is Chinese, composing approximately 75% of the population, Chinatown is considerably less of an enclave than it once was. However, the district does retain significant historical and cultural significance. Large sections of it have been declared national heritage sites officially designated for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
Esplanade Park is one of the oldest parks in Singapore. Built in 1943, it was re-developed in 1991 to enhance the Civic District’s identity. There are many historical landmarks in this park which are of interest to tourists and locals alike. These include the Lim Bo Seng Memorial, the Cenotaph and the Tan Kim Seng Fountain. It also forms an important frontage for the Padang, Supreme Court and City Hall.
This merlion is to welcome all visitors to Singapore. Standing tall at 8.6 metres high and weighs as heavy as 70 tonnes, it was designed since 1964. It is originally located at the mouth of the Singapore River. It then settled into its new home here at Merlion Park, located next to One Fullerton, overlooking scenic Marina Bay.

The Singapore Merlion is made of cement fondue, its skin from porcelain plates and eyes from small red teacups.

The history of the merlion goes back in Singapore's ancient times, where Singapore was known as Temasek. A Javanese prince discovered a mystical beast which he later learnt was a lion. Then he named this island 'Singapura' in Sanskrit which means Lion City. The fish tail of the Merlion represents Singapore's earliest beginnings as a fishing village.

Today the Merlion attracts more than one million visitors a year who make the trip to the Merlion Park. There are five official Merlion statues in Singapore. They can be found at :

a. Two at Merlion Park, adjacent to One Fullerton
b. One at Sentosa Island
c. One at Mount Faber &
d. Finally, one at the headquarters of Singapore Tourism Board at Orchard Spring Lane

Orchard Road is a road in Singapore that is the retail and entertainment hub of the city-state. It is regularly frequented by the local population as well as being a major tourist attraction. Often the surrounding area is known simply as Orchard.

The immediate vicinity of Orchard Road, Orchard Planning Area is one of 55 urban planning areas as specified by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and is a commercial district. It is part of the Central Region, and Singapore's central business district, the Central Area.

During the National Day Rally Speech 2005, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that he would create more landmark buildings to create more fun in the district, partly to keep up with vibrant cities around the region.

The Singapore River is a small river in Singapore with great historical importance. The Singapore River flows from the Central Area, which lies in the Central Region in the southern part of Singapore before emptying into the ocean. The immediate upper watershed of the Singapore River is known as the Singapore River Planning Area, although the northernmost part of the watershed becomes River Valley. As the Central Area is treated as a central business district, nearly all land surrounding it is commercial. It is one of about 90 rivers in Singapore and its islands.

Singapore River is where the colourful and romantic history of the river and the myths and legends can still conjure up memories of the lighters, bumboats, tongkangs with their painted eyes to see the danger ahead and sampans of yesteryear. This is where the Malayan princes once sailed and this is where the bullock carts plodded their way up and down each bank as the river found its way to the former rocky river mouth. This is also where an early civilisation was conquered by the Javanese Majapahit Empire, in the year 1376.
