The Arts Institute found temporary accommodation in a wing of the Palazzo degli Studio which subsequently became an Archaeological Museum. In 1863, a new location was found for the Institute as part of the renovation of the Fosse del Grano (the wheat stores). The building represents one of the most significant projects of Alvino''s career. The construction, which began in 1864, was completed after Alvino''s death by his student Giuseppe Pisanti, who signed the monumental stairway in 1880.
This is one of the most famous and celebrated Italian islands in the world, noted for its extraordinary natural beauty, its splendid panorama, its azure grotto and its mild climate. Capri is without doubt one of the most sought after destinations among the international jet-set. First settled by the ancient Greeks who went on to found the city of Partenope, the tiny island of Megaride is home to the city''s oldest castle. Many believe the name, Castel dell''Ovo, is due to its unusual shape (ovo meaning "egg"); however, others maintain that the name is linked to medieval legend. Apparently the poet Virgil hid an egg in an iron cage and left it to hang from a rafter in a secret place within the castle; if the egg is broken, both the castle and the city are doomed to destruction.
Beyond the Madre del Buon Consiglio the Via Capodimonte curves up to the Porta Grande, the main entrance to the magnificent Capodimonte Park.
Like the Roman catacombs, these consist of a maze of passages and tomb chambers, but are more ambitious architecturally and have finer paintings than their Roman counterparts. The church of San Gennaro extra Moenia dates from the fifth century .
On the right-hand side of Via del Duomo, stands the cathedral, dedicated to St Januarius (San Gennaro), patron saint of Naples. Originally built between 1294 and 1323 in French Gothic style, it was considerably restored and altered after an earthquake in 1456. In the center of the front, which dates from 1877 to 1905, is an older doorway.
This ornate shopping gallery filled with stylish boutiques was built between 1876 and 1883 as part of planned improvements to Via Fosse del Grano. The cast-iron and glass roof and solid masonry of the walls graced with splendid stucco decorations are a masterful combination of modern and traditional construction techniques. The gallery opens out onto Via Pessina, Via Broggia and the square in front of the National Museum.
Solfatara is a dormant volcano belonging to the volcanic area of the Campi Flegrei, believed by the ancients to be the entrance to the regions of Hell. It is noteworthy today on account of the explosions of sulphuric gases, at temperatures well over 160° C, as well as for the anhydrous carbon vapours and the smaller eruptions of boiling mud. During the nineteenth century it was a renowned spa, on account of its waters, natural saunas and hot mud; sulphur compounds were also extracted. It currently represents the epicentre of the cyclical rising and lowering of the base of the campi Flegrei, known as bradyseism.
