Description
Coimbatore known as the Manchester of South, is also the most industrialised city of the state of Tamil Nadu. Due to the Nilgiri mountains in the western side, it experiences a pleasant climte throughout the year. The rich soil served as the backbone for the agricultural products, especially cotton. The first textile mill of Coimbatore was establishe in the year 1888 and since then it also became the textile capital. Coimbatore is also known for the manufacture of motor pump sets and varied engineering goods and its handloom products. A large number of technical institutions in Coimbatore cater to the growing technical needs of the region.
Location
Located in the western district of Coimbatore, the district capital serves as an entry point from Kerala. It is situated on the banks of River Noyyal in the Western Ghats and hence experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year.

Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary

Anamalai wildlife sanctuary is about 90-km from Coimbatore and is situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Western Ghats near Pollachi. The area of the sanctuary is 958-sq-kms. An ecological paradise, this sanctuary encompasses a National Park. It has just recently been renamed Indira Gandhi wildlife sanctuary.

Parambikulam - Aliyar Multipurpose Project

Parambikulam-Aliyar Multipurpose Project consists of a series of dams interconnected by tunnels and canals for harnessing waters of the Parambikulam, Aliyar, Nirar, Sholiyar, Thunakadavu, Thekkadi and Palar rivers, lying at various elevations, for irrigation and power generation. The scheme is an outstanding example of engineering skill. It is located in the Anamalai range.

V O C Park

Named after the freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram, the VOC Park is the most appropriate place to go with children. The Coimbatore Corporation maintains the park. The Park houses a mini Zoo, models of prehistoric dinosaurs, Children' Train, Swing, Slider, Seesaw and other play equipment and is more like an amusement park for the children. The park has a stretch of grass patch conveniently mowed to sit on.

Thiruppur

An important textile centre in Coimbatore district, it is also famous for hosiery products. Thiruppur is also closely associated with ' Thiruppur Kumaran ' one of the valiant freedom fighters. It is 50-km from Coimbatore.

Museums in Coimbatore

The Forest College Museum is one of the oldest of its kind in the country and is worth a visit. The museum preserves the fossils of plants and animals and also dead specimens of rare plants and animals. The Khadi Gandhi Gallery is completely dedicated to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi as the name suggests. The museum has a rare collection of photographs from various phases of his life. The Government Museum is one of the most recent additions to the city housing and diplaying tribal objects from the area.

Temples of Coimbatore

The Marudamalai Temple 12 kms from the city is the most famous temple dedicated to the local deity Lord Muruga. Marudamalai in local terms means mountain of medicine and that is the reason for which devotees from far and wide come for the blessings of the deity. The Perur Patteeswaraswamy Temple was built by the Chola dynasty and is also one of the most reverred temples of Coimbatore. The Thirumoorthy Temple Thirumoorthy Temple is situated at the foot of Thirumoorthy Hills adjoining the Thirumoorthy Dam. This is about 20 km from Udumalpet on the Highway from Palani to Coimbatore. A perennial stream flows by the side of the Sri Amalingeswarar temple and nearby there is a waterfall.

Waterfalls in Coimbatore

Coimbatore has many beautiful waterfalls nearby, which can be visited. Some of the important are Sengupathi Water Falls, Monkey Falls, The Siruvani Waterfalls and Dam and the Vaideki Water Falls.\r\n
