Location
The land of composite cultures is situated in the heart of desert of Rajasthan. Ajmer is flanked by the Ana Sagar Lake on one side and the Arvalli hills range on the other. The climate is mostly hot and the two rivers are important water sources, the Luni and the tributaries of the river Banas.
Popularly known as the Dargah Sharif, this is the shrine of the Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, better known as Garib Nawaz. This is considered to be his last resting place. The legend goes that in 1256 A.D. at the age of 114, the saint entered a cell to pray in seclusion for six days, at the end of which he passed away. The Urs or fair is held annually to commemorate these six days. Pilgrims of all faiths from the world come over here to attend the urus. They say that your wishes are fulfilled here if your prayers are true and with pure heart. \r\nThe Dargah is entered through a high gateway with silver doors. The great gate, Buland Darwaza leads to a second courtyard. The grave of the saint is surrounded by a silver railing and partially by marble screen.\r\nEmperor Shah Jehan's daughter got a prayer house build over here for women devotees. In the courtyard are two massive iron quadroons in which Kheer, a sweet made of milk, is prepared and distributed on special occasions. The smaller pot can contain 2,240 Kgs of rice and the larger one can take double the amount.\r\n
The mosque supposedly built by demolishing a Sanskrit college by Mohhammed Ghauri in the 12 century, is a unique piece of Indo-Islamic architectural style. It still has few ruins of th erstwhile temple/ Sanskrit college. Three pillars have been placed on one top of the other to give the impression of height of which no two pillars are alike. The pillared hall is 61 mtrs long and its 124 columns support the 10 shallow domes. An arcade of seven arches can be seen, which is finely engraved with Kufi and Jughra inscriptions from the holy Koran.
Once the royal residence of Emperor Akbar, now the museum has armors and sculptures of the Rajputs and the Mughals. The palace has been made red sand stone in square pattern and now it stands in the centre of the city.
This artificial lake located to the north of the city was built by Anaji during 1135-1150A.D. Mughal emperors, Jehangir and Shahajehan added to the beauty of the embankment by raising Bardari, the marble pavilions and developing the Daulat Bagh Gardens. But later this lake was converted into circuit house by the British residency.
The star fort was built by Ajai Chauhan in 1100 A.D. The fort was the site of military activity during the Mughal period, later used as the sanatorium by the British.
