    Singaraja is the largest city on the north shore of Bali.It was named Singaraja after the palace built by the Raja in 1604.Gedong Kirtya, just south of the town centre, is the only library of lontar manuscripts in the world.

The library contains some 3000 old manuscripts written on leaves of the lontar palm and numerous diaries, newspapers and periodicals dating from the period of Dutch occupation.Only the palm-leaf manuscripts are kept in lead boxes.
