Macau is an interesting place that oozes with an other-worldly atmosphere, thanks to its hundreds of years of fusion between the Portuguese, Chinese and the European cultures. In fact, being one of the major ports of China, it has attracted people from all over the world. The core area of Macau, better known as the Historic Center of Macau, contains a small world in itself that contains houses, churches, forts, and even a cemetery. You can find some of the oldest and best preserved buildings with architectural styles ranging from Renaissance to Baroque to even neo classical. Absorbing the local religious beliefs, there are buildings that integrate western style with local cultural characteristics to build something unique. Some of the famous attractions found here are A-Ma temple, Mandarin’s House, St Dominic Church, Cathedral Church, St Paul’s Ruins, Sam Kai Vui Kun Temple, N Tcha Temple, St Augustine’s Church and the Protestant Cemetery. Some other unreligious attractions of the place range from Portuguese buildings to Chinese houses and streets including the Moorish Barracks, Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, the Guia Fortress, the Guia Lighthouse, Section Of Old City Walls, Dom Pdro V Theatre, Leal Senado Building and the Lilau Square. In fact, the place is a living proof of the cultural, religious and architectural exchanges between the east and the west happening over a period of more than 400 years. It is this unique quality of this place that it has found a place on the World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage list in 2005.
