  • Description

Lying on the western side of Pearl River Delta, Macau is a gambling haven of Asia. The place got its name from the goddess Matsu temple (worshipped by fishermen and seafarers) built in the place in 1448. A local legend says that when Portuguese sailors landed at the coast of this place and asked the natives its name, they replied something in their native language which the sailors then interpreted as ‘Macau’. Working under the ‘One country, two systems’ formula, Macau does not have full democracy with its defense and foreign affairs still under Chinese control. This former Portuguese colony is today Asia’s answer to Las Vegas. Though the city itself is quite small, the place is full of Chinese and European style buildings that bring forth a unique blend of cultures. In fact, Macau itself presents a world of contrasts, of peace and glitz, of traditional and modern, as well as glamour and simplicity. The place thrives on its tourism industry as well as its gambling havens. Some of the popular attractions of the place include ruins of St. Paul’s, Macau Museum, the ancient A-Ma goddess temple, Grand Prix Museum, Macau Jockey Club horse racing, Bamboo bay and others. In addition to the sightseeing options, the place also has an unbeatable range of gourmet delights that will delight foodies from all over the world. There is a place for everyone’s favorite- spicy Indian, classy French, traditional Cantonese, exotic Italian as well as various others. Do not forget to sample ‘Pasteis de Nata’, a local Portuguese style egg tart specialist of Macau. For those looking to revel in the razzmatazz offered by the city, there are the unparalleled city casinos which have already established themselves as an important part of the city’s revenues. In fact, Macau with its interesting contrasts of Oriental and western is a perfect place to revitalize those sagging spirits of any weary traveler.

The place offers peaceful and soothing views in addition to a storehouse of Chinese architectural displays. Guarded by stone lions, the place is an architectural marvel in addition to being a profound cultural symbol of Chinese traditions. The stunning tiled roofs in addition to the inscriptions and poems carved along the cliff will add an enjoyable touch to your complete stay over here. Considered to the most famous sight of Macau, The Ruins of St Paul’s stands right next to the Macau Museum as well as the Monte Fortress. Constructed in 1580, St Paul’s Church caught fires twice, once during 1595 and another during 1601. Today, only the grand stone stairs and the front façade is what remains of the original structure. It was after the reconstruction of the church after the previous two fires that a violent typhoon hit the structure in 1835 burning it again for the third time in history. Unfortunately, it was during this fire that this magnificently decorated Catholic Church was relegated to the pages of the history. Its glory is today signified by its remains. The bottom of the structure has five tiers. First contains ten ionic columns along with three entrances. Second tier has ten Corinthian columns along with three windows. These two tiers as a whole are said to represent the Society of Jesus in addition to their missionary activities. However, it is the other three tiers that are the most ornate of the whole. With the walls covered with various patterns, their combination is also said to represent the Holy Trinity as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary. There are also the very ‘Chinese’ stone lions flanking the sides of the third and fourth tiers. The whole structure is today considered as a symbol of a perfect fusion between the east and the western cultures.
